Lubeck's city gate, Holsten Gate, was built between 1464 and 1478 with a similar look to buildings we had seen Holland. It was part of their defence but also provided a form of prestige for the town. The towers unevenly subsided into the marshy ground over the centuries but a serious restoration effort has stopped that now.
